Told Mom it would be immoral to go tonight
by La Capra inyeah, i did.. i called her this afternoon, after i got home from work (to check on my dad, and, well, you know...).
it turns out she picked up the nasty flu: fever, chills, scratchy throat, snot everywhere, sensitive eyes, she sounds like grover.. i gave her all the advice she usually gives me, including her favorite (and one that often kept me home from meetings in my youth), "stay out of the night air for a few weeks...".
to which she responded, "but i have to go out tonight.

And Poof-It Was Gone
by La Capra infunny thing happened during my first year of law school.
i developed a little bump on my left wrist about this time of year-while i was preparing for my first round of exams.
it was not painful and i attributed it to the keyboard on my ibook (on which i could type fast-as-lightening) and the queen-sized blanket i had knitted the previous spring (which in and of itself prompted an epiphany that i probably could be doing something more productive with my time than knitting-like get a doctorate).. my bump accompanied me through my first, second and third year of law school, and into the final and fourth year.

I think I just got the total experience
by La Capra ini tried to go to walmart this morning.. this story's origin began last april, when, just days before my final exams, my gateway laptop went nuts.
as a third year law student, having taken her exams for the the entire duration on computer, the notion of changing my exam approach to bluebook was out of the question.. i was able to obtain, for the short term, another laptop and survived third year just fine.. however, it took three rounds of repairs to get my computer back in working order for more than three weeks (gateway kept replacing the hard drive, but it was the motherboard that was failing-good news was that they only charged me for one disk drive, and not for the mother board eventually installed.).
and i am not the kind of person that feels comfortable with the "what ifs" so when about a few days ago, my gateway laptop went to a screen that i only saw before each of the three prior "deaths," i decided that my peace of mind was worth many hundreds of dollars and decided to get a "backup" laptop, considering i have two more rounds of exams and the bar exam through which i need a reliable computer.. i tried to order the sub-500 dell, but it wouldn't arrive in time for december's exams, so i started looking at the other offers out and about.. that meant i actually had to go to a brick and mortar establishment so i would have a computer in hand, rather than in some shipping queue.. i am not much of a consumer.

New Case: good for WBTS
by La Capra inin reviewing the "new news" out of the courts this morning, i came across this case: doe v. corp. of president of church of jesus christ of latter day saints: 2004 wl 1846365 utah app.,2004.
aug. 19, 2004. the church won, the basic premise was that the church owed no duty to the children to warn of a "high priest's" past sexual abuse activities.
"church did not have special relationship with church "high priest" giving rise to duty to warn of his alleged sexual abuse; "high priest" was not church agent, employee, or member of clergy, and abuse did not occur on church property or during church-sponsored activity.".

WTBTS goes for the big so what.
by La Capra inon september 15, the church will make its motion for a dismissal-basically admitting all the allegations of the four plaintiffs, but alleging that even if they were all true, they did not do anything that would entitle the plaintiffs to any kind of relief.
what i think is "of note" and which distinguishes this from other cases is that glew babysat kids "in an official position" while their parents went out in service.
my mom left me with "witness" sitters a few times while she did the auxiliary thing.

It's celebration time!
by La Capra insimon just posted about passing some tests...it's that time of year.
as the "academic" year comes to a close, what sorts of academic achievements can we celebrate and offer congratulations for?.
for many of us growing up, we had to hide our academic achievements (or our children's), and down play our academic interests and goals.

Hugely embarrassing afternoon
by La Capra inall my co-law clerks were in on it, my boss in the law office i work at was in on it, three of my professors were in on it, half the attorneys in the office were apparently in on it.
i got hauled into court today, supposedly to watch an attorney appeal a decision on a motion, but no, that's not what happened.
i walked into a set up, by my boyfriend, to be proposed to, in open court in front of nearly 20 people.
